WILD ANIMALS: The interiors of Korba District, especially Podi-Uprora, Kenda, Kendai and Lapha ranges, are home for a number of carnivorous animals. During the second World War, when the Army was posted here, a number of wild animals were hunted, especially Sambhar and Cheetal.Due to which, these species of animals have became nearly extinct. The main wild animals found at present in the district are as below:-
1. Tigers (Felis Figris) : They are mainly found in the forests of Kudmura in the District. They are also found in the forests of Kendaikhar of Korba Development Block and Podi-Uprora of Katghora Development Block. During summer they are found near rivers and streams. During the rainy seasons they live in the high hills to escape the havoc created by the flies and mosquitoes. Leopards are also found in these jungle.
2. Jungle cat (Felis Chavs) : They are found in large number almost every where in the district. They live in forests and open grassy areas. They prey upon rabbits, peacocks and other small animals and birds etc.
3. Musak Cat (Virera Malaccersis) : They are known as 'Vinori' in Chhattisgarhi language. They make bungs in the trees in forest lands and live there.
4. Mongoose (Herpestes Pallidus) : It is called as 'Newra' in the local language. It is found in large numbers almost everywhere in the district. Mangoose are fearless creatures of also enter houses in search of food. It is a very active animal. It can also be domesticated and trained as pets.
5. Striped Hyena (Hyena Striata) : It is found in most of the places in a district. This animal avoid human contact but is also dangerous. They eats stale meat and is a nocturnal animal.
6. Jackal : It is called as 'Bighuwa' or 'Hundra' in local language. They hunt for food in small groups. This is a dangerous animal and sometime even takes away small children.
7. Indian Bear (Melurus Ursinus) : This is found in the dense hilly forests of Katghora and Podi-Uprora. This animal is totally nocturnal. During day time, it sleeps below trees or in caves.In the district, deer and bats are also found. The main birds found in this district are Peacock, Thithar, Jhadi Bater, Ghusar Bater, Pigeons, Parrots, Cranes, Mynah, Goriah, Crows and Cuckoo. The main types of fishes found are Rohu, Recha, Mongri, Kothra, Kothri and Kathala. These are found in large numbers everywhere. As there are a large number of snakes and wild animals in this area. There have been several instances of harm cased to the people.
